Member States of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific decided, on 23 May 2012, to proclaim a new Asian and Pacific Decade of Persons with Disabilities for the period 2013 to 2022, through adoption of a resolution.  

The new Decade aims to promote the full realization of the rights of persons with disabilities, including through the ratification and implementation of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in the Asia-Pacific region.

United Nations, Bangkok, 8 March 2012 — On 8 March, the United Nations observes International Women’s Day. This year, the focus of the Asia-Pacific regional event was young people’s activism to end violence against women and girls. An interactive panel was held at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok under the framework of UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon’s global campaign UNiTE to End Violence against Women.

Bangkok (UN ESCAP Strategic Communications and Advocacy Section) – Asia-Pacific governments have concluded three days of high-level talks here by endorsing a road map based on greater regional cooperation to fast-track progress towards meeting global commitments on the 2011 Political Declaration on HIV and AIDS and the Millennium Development Goals.

The Asia-Pacific region is preparing for the 10 year review and appraisal of the implementation of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing (MIPAA), which will culminate in an Asia-Pacific Intergovernmental Meeting in 2012. To better support governments' efforts in the review and appraisal, ESCAP, in cooperation with the China National Committee on Ageing, organized a Preparatory Meeting from 22 to 24 November 2011 in Beijing.
