“Protection, Empowerment and Equality:  ESCAP supports the building of a socially inclusive society for all in Asia and the Pacific, including women, youth, persons with disabilities and older persons”.

Asia and the Pacific is a region of great diversity and disparity, presenting a contrasting picture in terms of progress towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals —a set of eight time-bound and measurable goals for development and poverty eradication.

Businesses that recognize the added value of diversity are now eligible for the pioneering ESCAP-Sasakawa Award for Disability-Inclusive Business in Asia and the Pacific. The Award, developed in partnership by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), the Nippon Foundation (TNF), and the Asia-Pacific Development Center on Disability (APCD), recognizes the leadership of companies that provide enabling working environments, deliver inclusive products and services, and are innovative in their disability-inclusive approach.

Representatives from 10 countries across the Asia-Pacific region joined a United Nations Regional Forum on 17 and 18 April 2013 to formulate policy to create a supportive environment for women’s entrepreneurship.
 
Held in China’s capital, the Regional Forum on Creating an Enabling Environment for Women’s Economic Empowerment through Entrepreneurship in Asia and the Pacific examined key trends and obstacles, and in particular, culled findings from in-depth research on socio-cultural and policy environments in China, India, Indonesia and Malaysia.

Regional International Women’s Day Commemoration highlights a deaf woman’s testimony against forced sterilization   

“Forced sterilization is a form of violence against women. I will continue to fight as a deaf woman to advocate our rights.”   

Ms Patcharawan Saengsunthorn, President of the Association of the Deaf of Chonburi, Thailand, shared her personal story and showed her commitment to ending violence against women to the guests at the United Nations observance of the International Women’s Day in Bangkok on 8 March 2013.

While women constitute roughly half of India’s population, they are strikingly underrepresented in the labour force (at 31 per cent) and even more scarcely so among entrepreneurs. Merely 13 per cent of entrepreneurs in India are women. Change, however, is on its way.

Issue: International Migration

10 January 2013 – ESCAP, on behalf of the UN Regional Commissions, assumed the chairmanship of the Global Migration Group on 1 January 2013, for a period of six months. The Group is an inter-agency body bringing together 15 UN entities and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to promote the wider application of relevant international and regional instruments and standards relating to migration and development.
