National Consultations on Reducing Inequality in the Pacific

ESCAP is planning to hold two National Consultations on reducing inequality in the Pacific sub-region. The Consultations will be held in Suva, Fiji on 15 June 2016 and in Tarawa, Kiribati on 17 June 2016, respectively. The objectives of the Consultations are: i) to examine the drivers and impact of multidimensional inequality ; ii) to share knowledge and good practices on measuring, analyzing and combating inequality; and iii) to build awareness and capacity on key policy measures required to reduce inequality towards realizing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

South Asia Subregional Forum on Youth Volunteerism to Promote Participation, Development and Peace, 23-24 April 2016, Lalitpur, Nepal

ESCAP, in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Nepal, the Global Peace Foundation (GPF) and the Global Young Leaders Academy (GYLA) convened the “South Asia Subregional Forum on Youth Volunteerism to Promote Participation, Development and Peace” on 23 and 24 April 2016, in Lalitpur, Nepal. The Forum, where 200 - mainly youth - participants from 13 countries were present, involved interactive discussions around issues pertaining to three clusters, namely environmental service, disaster management, and peace and harmony.

Disability needs assessment and capacity development for the Marshall Islands, 15-17 February 2016

ESCAP organized a national consultation on disability statistics for the Government of the Marshall Islands in Majuro from 15 to 17 February 2016. The 3-day consultation aimed at supporting the Government in its efforts to establish by 2017 the evidence base on the implementation of the Incheon Strategy to "Make the Right Real" for Persons with Disabilities and involved many stakeholders including the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Economic Policy, Planning and Statistics Office, the Nitijela (Parliament) and disabled people's organizations.

ESCAP participates in 7th Meeting of the COMCEC Poverty Alleviation Working Group

ESCAP participated in 7th Meeting of the Standing Committee for Economic and Commercial Cooperation of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (COMCEC) Poverty Alleviation Working Group, held on 11 February, in Ankara, Turkey. The Meeting was held on the theme of “Accessibility of Vulnerable Groups to Social Protection Programmes in the OIC Member Countries”, and deliberated on the efficiency of existing social protection policies and programs.

Empowering Youth to deliver on SDGs by 2030

The above-mentioned meeting was jointly convening by UNDP, UNV and ESCAP, in the UNCC on 11 and 12 January 2016. This brought together 30 experts on youth mainly from UNDP and UNV offices in countries across Asia and the Pacific. Discussions took place on the status of youth in the Asian and Pacific region and what interventions were needed to address challenges and build on opportunities in the context of the SDGs.

ESCAP celebrates 2015 International Day of Persons with Disabilities

ESCAP is pleased to mark the 2015 International Day of Persons with Disabilities by launching both a new publication and a newly improved and relocated Accessibility Centre. The theme of the day is ‘Inclusion matters: access and empowerment of people of all abilities’. The day raises awareness about the many barriers faced by more than one billion persons who live with disabilities around the world – 650 million of whom live in the Asia-Pacific region.

3rd Global Youth Meet 2015

ESCAP participated in the 3rd Global Youth Meet 2015, held in Visakapatnam, India from in 29 November to 2 December 2015. The meeting brought together over 200 young people, policymakers, academics and representatives from private sector and international organizations from 30 countries, to discuss youth engagement in relation to SDG implementation.
