Strengthening National Capacity to Address Gender Concerns in Meeting the MDGs in Asia and the Pacific

19 Jul 2012
Issue
ESCAP, in partnership with the All-China Women’s Federation and the Yunnan Women’s Federation, organized a Regional Workshop to Strengthen National Capacity to Address Gender Concerns in Meeting the Millennium Development Goals in Asia and the Pacific from 16 to 19 July in Kunming, China.

The Workshop brought together policy and decision makers at the national and provincial levels, as well as representatives of national women’s machineries from Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia and the Philippines.  It addressed key concepts and fundamental issues related to gender mainstreaming and women’s economic empowerment.  The Workshop also facilitated cross-country learning through knowledge and experience sharing, including field trips to learn about successful women entrepreneurship initiatives and a model community for migrant workers.

All participating countries developed plans for action to further promote gender mainstreaming and women’s economic empowerment towards achievement of the MDGs.  Participants expressed their commitments to applying some of the approaches and strategies introduced at the workshop, including integration of  gender issues into all sectors’ work through policy-making and budgetary processes at the national and provincial levels.
