The Asia-Pacific Intergovernmental Meeting on the Second Review and Appraisal of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing will be held from 10 to 12 September 2012 at the United Nations Conference Centre in Bangkok.   The Meeting is being convened in pursuance of Commission resolution 67/5 on full and effective implementation of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing in the Asia-Pacific region.

The workshop was organized with the collaboration between United Nations Economic and Social Commission of Asia and the Pacific and the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (Division for Social Policy and Development) of United Nations Headquarters.  It focussed on substantive discussion on the commitments and recommendations of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing.  Discussions and exercises have introduced concepts and techniques in various aspects of social policy.  The workshop also considered whether existing policies target older persons and what their

Next year marks 10 years since the adoption of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing.  The theme of this year’s International Day of Older Persons, “Launch of Madrid Plus 10: The growing opportunities and challenges of global ageing”, reflects this upcoming milestone.  This year we also commemorate 20 years since the adoption of the United Nations Principles for Older Persons.  These basic principles – independence, participation, care, self-fulfilment and dignity – both enshrine the human rights of older persons and give us the objectives for which we strive.

With the number of older persons in the region expected to triple by 2050 from 415 million to 1.25 billion, ESCAP recently organized a meeting to identify good practices, policy gaps and priority areas for action in ensuring quality health and long-term care services for older persons in Asia-Pacific. The local host for the Forum was Zhongshan College. The Regional Forum on Elderly Care Services in Asia and the Pacific was convened in Nanjing, China from 21 and 22 January 2011.

The Regional Seminar on Health Promotion and Active Ageing in Asia and the Pacific took place at the United Nations Conference Centre, Bangkok, during 15 and 16 November 2010. It was jointly organized by the Social Development Division of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) and HelpAge International. The Seminar was attended by experts on ageing, health promotion and self-care management, including representatives from governments and civil society organizations, as well as relevant international organizations.
