The Disability, Livelihoods and Poverty project focuses on understanding the dynamics of disability, livelihoods and poverty from the voices of persons with disabilities themselves. ESCAP is partnering with disabled persons organisations (DPOs) in eight countries to conduct both quantitative and qualitative action research to generate new data on the livelihoods of persons with disabilities in the Asia-Pacific region. The research is guided by the key themes and directions decided at a series of ESCAP convened meetings; the Stakeholder Consultation held in June 2010, the Disability, Livelihoods and Poverty Expert Group Meeting held in October 2011, and the Regional Stakeholder Consultation held in December 2011. At a capacity building workshop held in January 2012, DPOs shaped the research methodology to be used in the project. The data generated through the project will provide evidence to set policy for a new Asia Pacific Decade of Disabled Persons. Preliminary findings will also feed into and support the Incheon Strategy, in particular Goal 1 on poverty and employment. Findings of the research and the voices of persons with disabilities will be presented in a publication which will be launched at the High-level Intergovernmental Meeting on the Final Review of the Implementation of the Asian and Pacific Decade of Disabled Persons 2003-2012, to held in Incheon, Republic of Korea in October 2012.
