Asia-Pacific Preparation for MIPAA+10 Review

The Asia-Pacific region is preparing for the 10 year review and appraisal of the implementation of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing (MIPAA), which will culminate in an Asia-Pacific Intergovernmental Meeting in 2012. To better support governments' efforts in the review and appraisal, ESCAP, in cooperation with the China National Committee on Ageing, organized a Preparatory Meeting from 22 to 24 November 2011 in Beijing.

The Preparatory Meeting brought together population focal points and experts from governments, research institutions and civil society organizations from 22 countries and areas in the region, as well as international organizations. Participants shared their national experience in MIPAA implementation and review, and discussed how best to address the challenges the region faces on the protection and empowerment of older persons, such as social protection and health and social care for the elderly. The Meeting identified key regional priorities for future action under the three pillars of MIPAA, namely, older persons and development, advancing health and well-being into old age, and ensuring enabling and supportive environments.

These recommendations laid a foundation for the preparation of the Asia-Pacific Intergovernmental Meeting on the Second Regional Review and Appraisal of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing to be held in 2012. Participants also reviewed and endorsed the draft Provisional Agenda for the Asia-Pacific Intergovernmental Meeting.
